After further review, Lake County Coroner changes toddler’s cause of death from “homicide” to “undetermined” in Melissa Calusinski case

The Lake County Coroner’s Office — citing new evidence in the case of a toddler’s death that resulted in the conviction of then-day care worker Melissa Calusinski — has reclassified the child’s cause of death from homicide to “undetermined.” Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd announced Wednesday that after reviewing the case, “It is impossible to conclude that the final head injury was intentionally inflicted.” Calusinski, now age 28, is serving a 31-year sentence for first-degree murder after arguments were presented at her trial that she threw the 16-month-old boy to the ground while working at the now-closed Minee Subee day care center in Lincolnshire.
