With the average age of court reporters rising, courts across Illinois are facing a shortage of stenographers, according to Tammy Bumgarner, the director of court reporting services for the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts. In an interview with the The (Bloomington) Pantagraph, Bumgarner estimated that only 25 percent of the estimated 2,000 licensed court reporters in the state actually work in the courtrooms and the remaining vacancies won’t be filled until a state budget is passed.
